I know...it's pretty ballsy to even talk about a next album when the first one isn't even out. The numerous delays surrounding it have definitely been beyond my control, but as a result, it's changed my outlook on the next project. I'm almost positive I'll be less dependent on outside resources to help bring things to a finish.
Anyways, I'd love to sit here and explain what's going on with "My Mom Thinks I'm Cool" but despite the delays, I'd say we're still pretty much on schedule. So all I can say is, if things aren't entirely sorted out by January, then what IS ready to be presented, will be. So stay tuned.
As far as the next album, I haven't really had a chance to talk things over with my engineer but I'm already coming up with ideas as far as the mix goes. I've been listening to A LOT of songs from the late 60's to mid 70's and diggin the mixing techniques used. It really spices things up and the number one thing I hate about songs today is how clean they sound, there's no real warmth, spacing or technique to what's happening. It's all pretty much squash this, eq that, limit this, and so on. So yea. Next album, if it ever happens. Dope ass throwback mixing.
Examples for your listening pleasure...

Some Insight On "Our Year" and "My Mom Thinks I'm Cool"
So it's been about a week now since I posted the first song off the album. If somehow you managed to miss it, (maybe you were in a coma or something and missed the numerous postings) here it is.

http://www.itsjacobo.com/track/our-year
With the first "songle"(I'm diggin that term) in place, I suppose this would be the time to finally speak on the concept around the track and even more importantly the entire the concept that will essentially envelop the whole album. So, with that said, let's dive into Our Year....
This is a pretty straight forward story telling track, or at least I'd like to think so. It's a simple love story with a twist, that's 2 parts truth and 1 part fiction. From the beginning of the recording process, this was, from start to finish, my favorite track. Upon it's completion it was already in the running as the lead "songle" for the album. The moment I came up with the beat/backing track, all the way down to writing the lyrics and the numerous takes it took to get the flow just right, this was just a fun track to do. As far as the concept, the basic framework for the hook actually came to me, from a conversation me and the love interest had, in a dream. The first 2 verses are straight autobiographical and you are essentially listening to exactly what happened the first time I met her. This is where the concept for the album comes into play.....
My Mom Thinks I'm Cool, starts off with Our Year, which takes place at the end of May at a friend's graduation party. From there the album takes the listener through a 4 month period in my life that is essentially tied together and built on the relationship of the tracks Our Year, Blacked Out & Wake Up Call. Those 3 songs touch on the themes of love, friendship and self-control, meanwhile the rest of the album encompasses the general idea of who I am as a person. I'm single, broke, unemployed, and I still live at home with my parents. Yet, despite whatever the listener's perception of me, may be at the end of the record, it doesn't really matter because, My Mom Thinks I'm Cool.

Random Thoughts...On "No Homo"
It’s saturday morning, I’m in a thinking mood… People who say “no homo” I don’t get it. If it was really “no homo”, then why would you try and bring attention to the statement by saying “no homo”? In essence aren’t you basically saying, “hey! look at this statement I just made. It’s pretty gay, in the most literal way possible!” It’s just like when people say “no pun intended”, if the pun wasn’t intended, then don’t bring attention to it… So from now on, if you wanna say “no homo”, just say “yes homo” cause it’s the same thing. Thank you.

It's Been A While...Random Thought...
The hardest part about being an independent artist? All your friends become fans and all your fans become friends. The lines get blurred along the way and you’re not sure how to treat who or where to draw the line…

Random Thoughts On The "Mixing Process"
So we officially have half the album done and mixed. The last half is waiting on a few final touches on the production before it gets sent off to be mixed as well. Since it’s gonna be a while before it drops, I figured I’d take this time though to speak a bit on the mixing process….
This is the first time I’ve ever had one of my projects mixed by someone else other than me. So the hardest part about getting this record mixed was mainly letting go of my death clutch on the album. I really can’t do it all by myself and so being able to finally understand and admit it, is definitely helping this album out as far as the finished product goes.
The other thing I never realized is how long in “musician time” it takes to get a record properly mixed. If you’re a hands-on musician, producer, rapper, singer, whatever… It’s practically impossible for the Engineer to get it right the first time, if you’re not in the room with them. So it might take a few mixes and hours or even days to get it the way you want. The important thing is to understand that you and the Engineer are always gonna have a different interpretation of what the record should sound like. So the first thing to do is definitely check your ego at the door, be polite as fuck and let the engineer know what you’re going for without being a dick. This person is responsible for how your record sounds in the end, piss them off and there goes the album.
Anyways, basically I just wanted to say that the Engineer is important as fuck. I produced the shit out of my album, wrote all the songs and had a big part in guiding how the songs that I didn’t write parts for (“Wake Up Call” & “Hype-er” come to mind) came out as well. With all that said, the Engineer has taken those tracks to another level and they all sound incredibly clean. So when this album drops, no regrets baby, cause everything you’ll hear is exactly how I planned and I’m letting it all hang out.

11th Hour Changes & Additions
As of today, I sincerely love them. I was putting the finishing touches production wise on a song today(“Finals Week”) and immediately realized it changed the entire feel of the song. As a result, the lyrics that were on the track are no longer up to par, so I’ve gotta get to writing. I’m not too happy about that aspect but for this track it should be worth it. Off to write….

I wonder if singer/songwriters write in the same key over and over because of vocal range limitations or laziness?

If I wrote a song called, “Look at You (With Your Nalgas Hanging Out)”, over a club beat — How long do you think it would take before it went viral?

Dreamin Like A Mofo....
So for the last 2 weeks or so, the same girl keeps randomly showing up in the middle of my dreams and essentially high-jacks them, from that point on.
I should probably preface this with the fact that my dreams are generally random as fuck, they go from one place to another with just the slightest incident linking them. Yet, somehow this girl shows up randomly in each of them without any explanation or link.
The one that just woke me up appears to be the figurative straw that broke the camel's back. It's what compelled me to write this. It all started with me and a friend heading out late at night to sell some counterfeit Star Trek:TNG merchandise outside of a K-Mart (stick with me here, Star Trek:TNG had just finished before I fell asleep). The K-Mart was selling Star Trek merch as well but their ish was riddled with inaccuracies and nothing pisses me off more, so I made some bootleg stuff that was accurate and true to the show. Anyways we got busted, and ran to Vegas (cause nobody gets caught in Vegas!--dream logic for sure). At this point I'm just walking around and laying low and then I run into the motherfucking Kanye West. I start talking to him and we begin to network, he's asking me about my music and what I do in general aside from music and all that. Then HE asks to take a picture with ME. So I'm like yea, I go to find a someone with a camera and right as I do BLAAMMMMMM!!!!!!!!
She shows up.....
So what do I do?
"Oh hey, (insert name).... let's take a pic with kanye."
At this point everything essentially falls apart. We can't figure out the best pose for 3 people (her issue), people begin to realize it's Kanye, and a crowd starts building. Now they're bumping his music LOUDLY and she wants to dance (typical chick move). I go along with it (typical dick move), and now Kanye is getting swallowed in a crowd of groupies and there goes my foot in the door to the music biz, because my priorities were no longer in check.
I woke up at this point. I'm just wondering though if this is supposed to mean something, like if it's a sign. Is this chick bad news? Is she the roadblock between me and success? So maybe it's a metaphor? Then I think, there's all kinds of chicks that I could dream about, yet THIS one keeps showing up.....
The other dreams she popped up in were far more mundane, yet the outcomes were fairly the same. I'm doing some average thing, (shopping at the mall or hanging out somewhere with friends), I run into her randomly (this NEVER happens by the way). Things start to happen, I drop everything I'm doing, it looks like there's gonna be something between us and then essentially she'll toy with my emotions and be like "oh, but we can't be a couple" or something to that extent. If, you keep up with me on twitter you'll remember the tweet about that dream
My gut instinct says ignore, ignore, IGNORE, the shit out of her and take this as a sign. Just figured maybe some of you could give me some insight on something I'm not seeing though.....

Drake - Thank Me Later Review
Let's just get into it....
1. Fireworks -
This is a real chill song. Dope ass beat, Drake's flow is like butter on this. Only downside is Drake's singing ability really shows it's limits on here. He should've let Alicia handle the entire hook. Still a good song though and a good start to the album. 4/5
2. Karaoke -
OK, well how do I put this? Not a wack song, but I don't think it's album material. NEVERMIND, Drake just started rhyming, it's getting slightly better. Figured out the flaw on this song, way too much singing in the begginning. 2/5 (the beat was pretty chill)
3. The Resistance -
So 3 songs in and I'm already seeing a trend. These beats are all mellow as fuck, looks like we've got ourself some mood music up in here. This is some dope rhyming, again the flow is on point and so is the singing as well. 4/5
4. Over -
You've all heard this song. At this point, it's the only "hype" track on the album. Only note worth making is Drake needs to practice double time rhyming before he tries to do it on a track again,(Tonedeff, Twista, Bone Thugs, those are all good starting points) but that's a discussion for another day. Probably the best track on the album so far. 5/5
5. Show Me A Good Time -
These drums are dope, this beat is fuckin nice. This is probably gonna wind up being my favorite track. Definitely one of those tracks where Drake's rhyming and singing find the perfect balance. 5/5
6. Up All Night -
Nothing mind blowing, nothing wack either. Standard "album cut" 3/5
7. Fancy -
God, the sample on this beat is annoying as fuck to me and the hook blows. Drake are T.I. are coming nice over this, but it's hard to focus... 2:49 the beat switches and gets better cause the sample gets EQ'd out of the mix. Drake pretty much takes over at this point.
First half of the song - 2/5 because of the beat.
Second half of the song - 4/5
8. Shut It Down -
Feels like Drake stole this cut out of R.Kelly's vaults or something ahaha This is the "listen to how dope my sex game is" track. The Dream feature is the highlight, and I'm realizing that I prefer Drake's rhyming over his singing. OH SNAP! 3:27 to the finish. If he had done this on the whole track could've been a 5/5. Instead, 3/5
9. Unforgettable -
He's channeling the flow from Best I Ever Had on this cut and it's working REALLY well. One thing I don't understand though, is why people keep putting Jeezy on light airy beats. He always sounds out of place on songs like this. Whatever though, not even his retarded voice can kill this song. 4/5
10. Light Up -
Do I really need to talk about this track? Drake comes about as hard as he possibly can and then boom! Jay puts him in check. It's win-win if you're a fan of both. Sick ass verse from Drake and sick ass verse from Jay. - 5/5
11. Miss Me -
ahaha that Nicki line came out of nowhere. Dope verses from both Drake and Wayne. As much as I dislike Wayne, Drake should take note of him as well on the double time tip. 4/5
12. Cece's Interlude -
Nice laidback beat, Drake's singing is pretty dope on this as well. Doesn't really feel like a song to me though, more like background music. 3/5
13. Find Your Love -
Dope beat and if you like when Drake only sings this IS the best song on the album that compliments his voice. 5/5
14. Thank Me Now -
Right here is Drake tying up all the loose ends, if you had any doubts about his skills because of the lack rhyming on the album, he comes with it on here. 5/5
Looking at it from a production standpoint, the best way to describe this album is: 808's & Heartbreak meets Blueprint 3. As far as Drake is concerned, you either love him how he is, prefer he rhyme most of the time, or you love his singing. That is what's gonna polarize everyone when it comes to this album. He sings A LOT on this. It's a bit too much for me, and it really shows the limitations of his voice in my eyes but regardless, this IS a solid album. Overall - 4/5

Thinking, Ponderous, Thoughts......
After this album, I don't think I'm gonna go through all this again. I absolutely hate having finished songs and then holding onto them because the "album" isn't finished. The album has been done for like 3 months at least, with the exception of these last 2 songs,(btw, now just down to one left). So yea, next time out and maybe for a while after that, I'm just gonna drop the tracks as I finish them and get them mixed. THEN at the end of it all, I'm gonna be like, "Oh hey, THAT was the album". I think it's gonna be a pretty smooth way of doing things and it'll help keep the flow of new songs from me, fairly constant. So, stay tuned.
In the meantime, I'll drop a blog later this week about the album, with just about everything you could want to possibly know about it.
Sincerely, Jacobo

Let's Talk About "Haters"
I keep seeing this EVERY WHERE, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, message boards, MySpace, etc. People getting all bent out of shape about "haters". Someone said something you didn't agree with so now they're a "hater". I don't like what you're doing, so now I'm a "hater". Your friend's not feeling an artist you're into, so now they're a "hater".
FUCKING STOP.
No, they are not a "hater". I don't know who coined this damn phrase but I'd like to punch them in the fucking mouth right now and stomp on their brains with my ratty Reeboks.
Listen, people having an opinion is NOT a bad thing. It's not "hating" to speak your mind and disagree with the majority. It's called criticism and having a differing point of view. Now, if you can't take the criticism, then maybe you should just stop doing whatever it is you do, because criticism is ALWAYS gonna be there. It's everywhere like it should be, the whole point of criticism is to make yourself BETTER. If I say your work/music/taste sucks, TOO BAD. Suck it up, do better, and SHUT ME UP. You saying I'm a hater or anybody else is a hater for that matter, isn't gonna do crap. You living in denial about your weak points & faults isn't gonna make you a better person. So next time instead of calling someone a "hater" how about you STFU and just DO BETTER.
"Who am I to judge one's perspective?
Though some of that shit y'all pop true it, I ain't relating
If I don't like it, I don't like it, that don't mean that I'm hating" - Common

NEW BEAT! Peep it!
So I promised earlier in the day on twitter and facebook that I'd drop something. Here it is. One NEW beat. Listen to it, download it, write to it, whatever you feel like. Enjoy.

By the way, this feels like it'll be a recurring thing; so more in the future I guess?

The Stress People! The Stress!!
Don't mind the mess on the floor, that's just where my brain exploded.
All last week and all of this upcoming week till Tuesday I will be cramming my brain full of more math than I've ever wanted to know or care to use. On top of that, music theory is spilling out of my ears and all that my eyes are seeing at the moment are formulas, equations, notes & scales. My brain is fried. It looks like this....

If that isn't bad enough, I'm almost fucking done with the album. Right now I'm in the process of finding someone to handle the enormous task of mixing it. Might not sound like a big deal to you, but trust me it is. It's the difference between a hot mess and hotness.
This is probably what you care about though:
-Album art within the next couple of weeks
-Lead single in late May/early June

If you care about me, you're probably wondering how I'm handling all this. Let me say this, it's a good thing me and Jack in the Box are in love again. 3 for $3 bitches, 3 for $3...
Till next time.
Sincerely, Jacobo

A Victory For Fry Lovers Everywhere!!
It's taken me 6 long years of boycotting the fries at Jack In The Box ever since they made the switch to those disgusting natural cut ones. Today I come to you all with good news, the war is OVER. 2 days ago the natural cut fries were disposed of and since then my taste buds have rejoiced.

Kiss my ass, you bitchmade fries!
The original fries are back and in full effect. Jack In The Box, our love affair has been rekindled. 1 battle down, 1 battle left. Carl's Jr., I'm coming for that ass!!!
Oh and Morgan Spurlock, you're still a douche....

My Brain Is About To Explode...
It was a busy ass week for me with school, had a Math test, Guitar test, and a paper due. So if you were curious at all, those things have kept me preoccupied for the last 2 weeks.
On to other things though, I feel like my brain is about to explode. I've been writing new material instead of finishing up the album and it's driving me crazy as a result, because now I want to write to the new stuff. I've taken a break though, so hopefully sometime after the album drops you can hear a few of these beats/songs I've been coming up with more recently. In the meantime though be patient. There's been a great deal of progress made in regards to the album. Earlier today I wrapped up recording on the opening track of the album, "Our Year" and I might have recorded the final take for what could possibly be the closing track, "Wakeup Call". At the moment, it's the only song on the record I'm a bit iffy about; although it feels like a good transition into the next album. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Some other things I feel I should mention:
Please, take some time out to add me on the twitter if you haven't done so already and also become a fan on the facebook. That page in particular is lookin pretty dead in comparison to my MySpace and Twitter.
Heard the new Drake song today, from what I understand this was his choice for the first single off of his album. I have to say looks like a really bad move. The song is called "Over", it's a fairly strong song, but it's not single material. This sounds and feels like an album cut. The beat is nice but the lyrics and hook are just not polished enough. This could be almost as bad as "Replacement Girl" was, it's definitely not on par with "Best I Ever Had" or "Forever". If this track becomes a hit, then this guy could basically record himself farting over a beat and watch it go platinum.
Lastly, in case you missed it, the Jacobo Beats Off EP finally dropped. You can get that here for FREE. It's a nice little collection of beats that didn't make the album, so take a listen get a feel for what could have been.

Scared Shitless and Droppin The Ball Lately....
Yup. That's been me as of late. I suppose I'm gonna have to deliver finally on Monday with a new blog that's not music related, but let's deal with the initial part of this.
I've been having one case of writer's block like you wouldn't believe. I'm almost positive it's all anxiety, more so than me actually not having anything to say/write. I'm at the point right now in the album where I'm actually happy with everything I have. I'm like 2 songs away from being done with this and that scares me shitless because if you been following the blogs and the progress of the album you'll know that I've been at this point about 4 different times. Every time I'm down to about 3 or 4 songs left on the album, instead of finishing them, I wind up scrapping everything and decide to start all over again. So I'm really committed this time around to not let that happen again and things are a bit different as well. There's a bit of support team here that's been giving me the extra push to drop this, plus this one of the few times where other people have helped contribute to the overall project--So for me to cop out now and bail on the album would be a bitch move indeed. All in all I'm shooting for May, don't hold me to it but I'm really hopeful about it being ready by then. In the meantime, you can enjoy the instrumental EP I'm dropping on Tuesday "Jacobo Beats Off". Who knows, maybe you can get an idea of what "My Mom Thinks I'm Cool" might sound like since the tracks on the EP are beats that got cut from the album.
As far me dropping the ball, well that's been pretty evident if you just look at my blogging frequency as of late. So to remedy that let's do one of the promised topics riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighttttttttttttttttttttttttt NOW.
You ever notice how some of your favorite TV shows, just change premise one day? Like the show is still good or entertaining but it's just not the same show it originally was? Someone is probably gonna chime in right now and tell me that's "Jumping The Shark" and this is where I jump in and say "Uhh, NO".
Jumping the Shark is the moment when a TV show starts to go downhill and is not as good as it once was before. What I'm talking about is when a TV shows' premise changes midway through the series. The quality of the show remains the same but the premise has changed.
I present to you Exhibit A

Do you remember during the first 4 seasons when this show was actually about family matters? The show dealed with Racism, gangs, dating, relationships, losing loved ones and you had Urkel as your comic relief to balance out these heavy issues.
Then something happened.....

It became the fucking "Urkel Show"
Does anyone remember, Stephan? How about Urkel and Carl fighting bad guys as Bruce Lee twins? Maybe you remember the episode where Steve built teleportation pads and the whole family took a vacation to Paris? Or when Steve cloned himself and Stephan became a real person, the Urkel Bot, Urkel Elvis, Urkel Einstein, Urkel in space, Urkel can read your mind, etc...
The show was still entertaining, but the premise had changed. So feel free to drop any examples you might have and we can discuss and reminisce.
Sincerely, Jacobo

Let's Connect!
So I've been thinking a lot lately about this blog and my blogging in general. It seems like I've been drifting away from what this was all about and lately it's just been a series of music updates. With that in mind I've made it a point to get back to basics so to speak. Will there still be music updates? You know it! The difference will probably be the abundance, actually I guess a better word would be the consistency, I suppose. They won't be coming one after another, like they have been as of late.
What can you expect? Well a few different things--actually, I wanna say right now FUCK my EP's. I'm just going to start dropping those tracks as they happen and then bunch them together afterward. So in short....
-Expect a track about every 1 to 2 weeks.
-Expect me to start rambling about all kinds of crap (bologna, TV shows not being TV shows, Dangerous, etc.)
-Get ready for the "oh whattttttt" factor.
-Lastly, the occasional song you've probably never heard before in your life.
Well now that we're all on the same page. Let's make this happen. Go on, hit me up next time, or this time. Let's discuss!
